Lightning and Rain Over the Desert

Heavy Rains Obscure Background Lightning over the Mojave Desert


This color photograph of lightning and a rain squall was made from Table Mountain on Ektachrome-X,
with an ASA of 100, 35mm film with a Zeiss-Ikon 35mm camera using a 250mm telephoto lens
operating at f/4. This exposure was for 5 minutes pointing NE out onto the Mojave Desert. To the lower
right center is a SAC communications tower some 1000 feet high, with the lightning and rain squall some
70 miles from Table Mountain. The photograph was made on September 29, 1967.

Table Mountain Observatory, operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is located just west of the
town of Wrightwood, California at an elevation of 7500 feet.
