Comet West - Close-Up
Color Photograph of Comet West in 1976
This color photograph was taken of Comet West, 1975n, with Kodak
Vericolor 3 1/4x4 1/4 sheet
film with an ASA of 100 through a 6-inch f/10 refractor mounted as the
guide telescope to the larger
24-inch reflector. This 32 minute exposure, starting at 1217 UT on March
12, 1976, was taken as
another astronomer, Dr. Arthur Lane of JPL, was doing science investigations
of the comet with the
cassegrain spectroscopic scanner of the 24-inch. It was nice doing science,
and getting some PR
pictures at the same time.
Table Mountain Observatory, operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL),
is located just west of the
town of Wrightwood, California at an elevation of 7500 feet.
